Will You Be There?

I have not posted for a while but wanted to update any of you who are still "sitting on the fence" about attending.

I also want to be sure that those who are coming or who are too far away to attend in person know more about what is going on and what they can see on the live stream. 

Here are the keynote speakers and the entertainment for the Friday evening.

As well as the big companies there will be local family history societies in the exhibition hall. I am a member of a few.  
Hampshire Genealogical Society will be there launching their updated website.
They told me that the website is now much easier to navigate and has a search function that helps you find information, this includes both the Research Centre catalogue and online shop which offers the Hampshire Village Booklet range.
For HGS members, online databases include Home Guard Names in the Hampshire Record Office, Monumental Inscriptions – Small Churchyards andMuster Roll of the 2nd Battalion Hampshire Regiment.To mark the launch they're adding the Wills Beneficiary Index.
All their information is compiled from work done by the volunteers over the last 45 years. There are many more indexes and datasets to come!

BLOGIVERSARY

ELEVEN YEARS

Today marks the eleventh anniversary of this blog.

Over the years it has changed direction and this year all of my posts have been about RootsTech.

The first part of next year will probably be the same as February is not far away. 

Today I want to update you on the other keynote speakers which have been announced and the sessions which those of us not at RootsTech 2019 can watch live.

The Keynote speaker for Thursday, February 28, 2019 is the  Emmy Award-Winning Actress Patricia Heaton.

The Keynote speaker for Saturday, March 2, 2019 is the Well-known Ukulele Master Musician Jake Shimabukuro.

RootsTech 2019 Salt Lake City Keynote Speakers

Who is lined up?

If you want to know who will be on the main stage at RootTech SLC next year then take a look.

Steve Rockwood is a familiar face who I got to speak to last year. It appears that we may share a common ancestor as I have relatives who were mormon pioneers.

However, I was not familiar with the Friday keynote speaker having not seen the film based on his story.

Rootstech Ambassadors interview Steve Rockwood

In this interview I am the Ambassador who connects with Steve Rockwood using Relatives at RootsTech that was discussed in the opening session on the Livestream from RootsTech on Wednesday 28 February 2018.

I also had a connection with a 5th cousin once removed. Ancestry DNA is giving attendees badges with places on them, this is an example, and asking us to find someone else with that same place on their badge. You then go together to collect your prize which is determined by a marble roll. When I was on my way to a talk on Wednesday I found my match. She was from Canterbury, England and the wife of the presenter I was about to watch. That is not all as I recognised the name of the person giving out the prizes and he confirmed that he was indeed the person showing on the Relatives at RootsTech app.

My 10th Blogiversary

10 Years of Blogging

Today I celebrate 10 years of this blog which has undergone some transformations over the years.

As the url suggests this blog started out with the name genemeet and was created so I could share my finds with family however distant.

A number of my posts have moved to a new blog I started called The Gadsby Family Ancestors and Cousins. I also have 2 other blogs one for discussing Genealogy software tools and one for my One Name Study of the surname Rosling.

For this my anniversary I want to try out another post using the SVG Family Tree Generator created by Tony Proctor and importing from a Gedcom file using a utility made available by Colin Spencer.

If you have a blog and want to give this program a try Tony has set up a Facebook group and you can see a demonstration in this video. 

I plan to update this with more family and links to other blog posts when I have time over the next few days or weeks.

Click on any box to open more information and pressing shift whilst clicking will close the information. At the moment hovering over an individual should give the same information.
There is no marriage information at the moment but I plan to add more. Look out for updates on Twitter or Facebook.
As it gets bigger you will be able to scale the diagram so it is easier to view.

RootsTech 2018 Keynote Speaker

Who would you like to see in 2018?

Today has seen the announcement of the second keynote speaker at 
RootsTech 2018.

Are you one of his over 20 Million fans.

RootsTech is delighted to announce that Brandon Stanton, creator of Humans of New York, will be the keynote speaker at RootsTech 2018, on Thursday, March 1, 2018. Stanton is a world renowned photographer and storyteller. He is recognized for his incredible talent of telling the story of everyday people he photographs, helping them feel important. At RootsTech 2018, Stanton will share his story, motivations, and some of the messages that his camera has captured in his quest to find the stories that drive the lives of the people of our world.

In 2010, Stanton was laid off as a bond trader in Chicago. Undaunted, he bought a camera and set out to create a photographic census of 10,000 everyday people on the streets of New York. He published his initial work on his website, Humans of New York, and then added quotes of his subjects to create short, heartfelt, personal glimpses from their lives. His efforts were noticed—gaining over 20 million fans across Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Stanton’s work beautifully illustrates that every life has a story—an important story. He masters the art of visually telling each person’s story, which he now conveys in his popular new weekly Facebook series for a TV show called Humans of New York: The Series. Some messages are sweet, some surprising, some sad, and many contain homespun nuggets of insights that people have found in the chronicles of their lives.

Since his journey began in 2010, Stanton and his camera have roamed the streets of New York and through more than 20 different countries, including the streets of some of the world’s most remote and troubled regions. The storytelling power of his social media sites have provided a platform to raise money to help change the situations of thousands of people in difficult circumstances.
